Fisher House provides safe haven for military families

For residents of the Fisher House, Christmas is a special time. "Here we can have all the help we need," said Griselda Martinez.

Martinez and her husband, Feliciano, were stationed in England when they found out their son's heart condition would force them back to the United States.

Ian is being treated at San Antonio Military Medical Center. The Fisher House affords them a place to live and time with their loved ones without the worry of going broke.

"We have five other kids," said Feliciano. "So the financial burden that they have taken off our shoulders has been really great."

On Tuesday, Kuper Sotheby's International Realty hosted a Christmas celebration for the families of the Fisher House, located at Lackland Air Force Base.

Executive Director Dwayne Hopkins describes the home as a Ronald McDonald house for military personnel.

Hopkins knows the economy is rough right now, but sees abundant satisfaction everywhere. "I got to be honest with you," he said. "When I leave every Friday, I feel good about what we do."

The Martinez's enjoyed food, friends and an extended family while Santa provided a little bit of home. It's one of the best gifts families like this could get.
