The Fisher House Foundation recently received a $5,000-grant from the Sgt. David J. Smith Memorial Fund, according to the Community Foundation of Frederick County.
The Fisher House Foundation is a public-private partnership that supports America’s military by providing homes built on the grounds of major military and veterans medical centers. The homes assist military families by allowing them to be close to hospitalized loved ones.
The grant will be used to purchase equipment for houses at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Fisher Houses.
The Smith fund was created in 2010 by Mary Jane McWilliams, John H. Jones, Leonard A. Smith and Olga Smith in memory of Sgt. David J. Smith, who was wounded in combat in Afghanistan and died in Germany. The fund also provides scholarships to Frederick High School graduates — Smith’s alma mater.
To donate visit www.cffredco.org/davidjsmith. Checks made payable to The Community Foundation of Frederick County can be mailed to 312 East Church St., Frederick, Md., 21701, with the name of the fund on the memo line.
