Two JROTC programs recently held fundraisers to benefit families of veterans receiving medical treatment at the York VA Medical Center.
Cadets at Siegel High raised $500 during a bake sale at the school, while the Riverdale High battalion raised the same amount collecting aluminum cans. Both schools donated all proceeds to the Fisher House effort.
The Fisher House program is a unique public/private project benefiting military families in their time of need. The Fisher House is a "home away from home" for the families of patients at the VA who are receiving medical treatment, and is free of charge for as long as the patient is receiving treatment.
The houses, consisting of 20 bedrooms and baths, are constructed within walking distance of the medical campus where their loved one is receiving treatment. Transportation will be provided between the Fisher House and the Nashville VA Hospital for those families who have patients at that facility.
Construction of the local facility is estimated to cost $3 million.
Riverdale plans to donate all funds from its can collection to the project. Local residents may place any recyclable cans in the collection trailer located near the school's entrance on Warrior Drive.
Those wanting to make a donation can mail checks or money orders to Tennessee Fisher House Foundation, Inc., P. O. Box 774, Brentwood TN 37024-0774. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Tennessee Fisher House Foundation. Donations are also accepted online at www.tennesseefisherhouse.org/donate.
