You can test your mettle and maybe your math skills by running in the Navy Ten Nautical Miler later this summer. What’s a nautical mile? Well, for starters, it’s longer than a regular mile. A nautical mile equals 1.151 miles (1.50779 miles, to be exact). So, it’s really an 11 and a half mile course. The race will start at 6:30 a.m. on June 5 at the base in Millington. This will be the second year the race has been run and event organizers say they expect a larger field to pound the pavement this year. “Nearly 450 runners from all over the country entered the event, and this year, the number of runners is expected to double,” organizers said in a press release. This year’s race will help Fisher House, “a home away from home for military families to be close to a loved one during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury,” organizers said. To give you a sense of what the competition you’ll be facing if you sign up, here are last year’s winning times: Stephen Hill won the men’s race finishing the 10 nautical mile route in 1:07:23. Jessica Myers won the women’s race with a run time of 1:23:47. To sign up for the race, or to learn more, visit the official website here, or check out the group’s Facebook page by clicking here.
