Today Fisher House Foundation announced its support of the 2011 Warrior Games presented by Deloitte. The competition, a joint effort between the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) and the Department of Defense, will take place May 16-21, 2011 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Fisher House Foundation joins Deloitte, United Service Organizations (USO) and British Petroleum (BP) as sponsors of the competition.

One month from tomorrow, 220 wounded, ill and injured service members will participate in the Opening Ceremonies which mark the beginning of the second annual Warrior Games competition. Thanks to Fisher House Foundation’s Hero Miles program, family members or guests of each athlete will be able to attend the event. Through the program, two family members or guests of athletes competing will be offered airfare so they can watch their loved ones compete in what’s become a heated rivalry between the service branches.

“It is an incredible honor to be partnering with the Fisher House Foundation to meet the needs of young men and women who have sacrificed so much for our nation,” said USOC Chief of Paralympics Charlie Huebner.  “Fisher House and the Fisher family have a long history of supporting the military and their families, and that commitment and generosity continues through their support of the Warrior Games.”

"Most of our programs and efforts focus on helping our wounded warriors and families during a time of crisis, just after they have been injured,” said Fisher House CEO Ken Fisher. “I am so excited that Fisher House can help give these heroes, and their families, the opportunity to participate in these Warrior Games and to celebrate just how far they have come in their recovery. They are all champions, even before the competition begins."

Athletes competing in the Warrior Games include both active duty and veteran service members from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Special Operations.  Athletes will compete in archery, swimming, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, cycling, track & field and shooting.

The Warrior Games is one component of the overall USOC Paralympic Military Program, which is focused on providing daily physical activity as an important part of rehabilitation at the community and installation levels. The program isn’t about elite performance, rather assisting service members with a physical disability to find enjoyment in activities that are an instrumental part of the rehabilitation process. Through the program, in collaboration with the Department of Defense, physical activity and sports participation rates at Warrior Transition Units, Wounded Warrior Battalions/Detachments and other Wounded Warrior programs throughout the U.S. have increased by 23% in the past two years.
