Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5073 and Auxiliaries presented $1,000 and about $700 worth of linen to the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center’s Fisher House here March 28.
The small veterans group from Frankston held its first donation drive for the Fisher House in 2010 and had collected $400 and $500 worth of linen.
“We were really overwhelmed that we collected so much more this year, what with the troubled economy,” Rick Miller, president of the VFW’s men’s auxiliary, said. “Frankston is a very small community, so for us to raise as much as we did shows just how much the people here care about Soldiers.”
Isaac Howard, manager of the Fisher House, said he is grateful for the donations.
“We greatly appreciate their contributions as it allows us to do just that much more for our families staying here,” Howard said. “I’m proud to know that we have such good friends from throughout the area that want to help support the Fisher House families.”
Fisher Houses, located at major military medical centers throughout the U.S. and Europe, offer shelter and support for military members and their families during a medical crisis.
