NFC Foundation Announces More Than $400,000 in Grants

The NFC Foundation, a Nash Finch Company (Nasdaq: NAFC) charitable organization, today announced that more than $400,000 in grants were provided to nonprofit organizations in 2010. The NFC Foundation provides funding to selected nonprofits within Nash Finch’s geographic operating areas, primarily in the foundation’s focus areas of hunger relief and shelter.

“Nash Finch sets the standard in caring for those in need in our community, whether it is grant support from the NFC Foundation, surplus product donations from Nash Finch food shows, or employee volunteers helping us pack food in our warehouse.”

Some of the organizations that received grants in 2010 included:

• Bridge for Youth – Since 1970, The Bridge for Youth has played a critical role as the Twin Cities access point for youth and families in need. The Bridge works with over a thousand youth and their families each year, offering a full continuum of services from hotline and emergency services to longer term housing, as well as life skills and career development. The grant of $15,000 from the NFC Foundation helps ensure that these vital services to youth and families in crisis continue.

• Casa de Esperanza – Headquartered in St. Paul, Minn., Casa de Esperanza works within communities by providing advocacy, emergency shelter, a 24-hour bilingual crisis line, and opportunities for peer education. The NFC Foundation grant of $15,000 supports the important efforts of Casa de Esperanza in the Twin Cities Hispanic community.

• Fisher House Foundation – Fisher House Foundation provides a number of programs supporting military personnel and their families. The $10,000 grant to the Fisher House Foundation is applied to the Scholarships for Military Children program whereby scholarships are awarded through DeCA commissaries, as well as for programs assisting military personnel and their families with food and other supplies during a time of need.

• Hope for the City – Hope for the City was established by Dennis and Megan Doyle to fight poverty, hunger, and disease by utilizing corporate surplus. The NFC Foundation grant of $15,000 helps Hope for the City continue critical hunger relief efforts in the Twin Cities.

• Hunger Relief Organizations – The NFC Foundation made donations totaling $105,000 to a variety of local hunger relief agencies in 21 markets in which the company operates distribution centers in the Midwest, Great Lakes and Southeastern United States. 
“Resources are more and more stretched while the need for help has increased dramatically over the last several years given the challenging economic conditions,” stated Brian Numainville, Chair of the NFC Foundation. “We are grateful to be in a position to provide financial and volunteer support for nonprofits doing so much to help those who are less fortunate in our communities.”

The NFC Foundation also administers the Feeding Imagination® educational program which donates new and gently used K-6 reading books to children and nonprofits assisting them. Since the inception of the program in December of 2006, more than 110,000 books have been donated.
