The Kappa Sigma Fraternity at New Mexico State University is hosting a Military Heroes Pizza Day at all the Papa John’s in Las Cruces, El Paso and Alamogordo.

Papa John’s is donating 15 percent of all the proceeds generated on March 7 to the fraternity’s philanthropy—the Military Heroes Campaign.

"We are striving to give back to the troops who have done so much for their country," said Karl Lopez, grand treasurer of Kappa Sigma. "They deserve to have something given back to them."

Kappa Sigma supports groups such as the Fisher House Foundation, that provides free housing to wounded veterans and their families throughout the duration of rehabilitation.

Kappa Sigma's Military Heroes Campaign was designed to honor and aid the thousands of wounded military veterans returning from active duty. The Military Heroes Campaign provides charitable donations to organizations such as the Fisher House and other entities.

The Fisher House Foundation is a segment of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund that provides free housing to wounded veterans and their families throughout the duration of rehabilitation.

"We are hoping to get as much of the student body engaged in this cause as we possibly can," said Lopez. "The work this foundation does is incredible, the more help they get, the better."

The Fisher House Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides a network of houses that are 5,000 to 16,000 square foot units, with up to 21 suites, donated to the military and Department of Veterans Affairs.

According to it's website, the program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of the men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that are normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs.

"Our fraternity wants to spread the word about this event because of the good it can accomplish," said Lopez. "If we can get the student body involved, we can make this a success for the soldiers in need."

Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation donates "comfort homes," built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one.

Annually, the Fisher House program serves more than 17,000 families, and have made available over four million days of lodging to family members since the program originated in 1990.

"It's so great seeing positive things being done for our veterans," said Marrisa Acosta, a junior criminal justice major. "More organizations need to get behind causes like this to make a difference for the people who protect this country."

The Foundation provides support to families of patients receiving care at the nearby medical center. Further information on the work of Fisher House Foundation, can be found at www.fisherhouse.org or by calling 888-294-8560.
