This Independence Day, let's remember the real reason we pause to spend time with our families and light off fireworks. More than 200 years ago, ours was a nation on bended knee. And only by lifting ourselves up - and stepping forward to claim our freedom - did we set off to create a country founded on democracy and the rights we so often take for granted. That freedom needs continual protection.

Today, rather than throw off chains of oppression, we work to defend ourselves from those who seek our destruction. The men and women of our armed services - and their families - are the ones who step forward every day to do that job and provide a blanket of safety under which we sleep every night. Whether downrange or stateside, this less than 1% of our population follow in the footsteps of the great patriots that first fought to establish our nation's freedom those centuries ago. As a grateful nation, we thank them.
