The Oak Creek VFW has been working behind the scenes for many years. You may have seen them out distributing poppys at local stores and establishments, at Forest Hill Cemetery for the Memorial Day Ceremony, or even at the Veterans Day Ceremony located at the Oak Creek Fire Station #3.
However, the VFW is much more than that.
Every year, the VFW donates thousands of dollars back to the veterans and the community at large. This year, the Oak Creek VFW has decided to re-implement the $500 dollar scholarship for an Oak Creek High School senior. Also, the veterans are purchasing and preparing food baskets for Thanksgiving and Christmas, to give to either families of deployed soldiers or veterans that could use a helping hand.
To give back to the veteran community, the post will also be making a significant donation to help build a Fisher House here in Milwaukee. The Fisher House provides a "home away from home" for military families to be close to a loved one during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury.
None of these donations are possible without the support of the community. Because of the money donated to the poppy distributors, and the money raised at the “Coin Toss” booth during the Oak Creek Lionsfest, these contributions are achievable.
This year, the post wants to do more. They want to exceed their goals and donate an additional $1,000. On October 27th, at the first annual Oktoberfest put on by the Oak Creek Legion Post, the Oak Creek VFW Post 8482 will have an information booth and raffle items. Through this raffle, the post would like to meet or surpass the additional $1,000.
