Fisher House at the Holidays

Fisher House at the Holidays

12.21.12

While most families try to go home for the holidays, many remain at Fisher Houses during the holidays supporting their loved one who is still getting care. Some of our past guests shared their holiday memories with us on Facebook!

Eva Last year at this time my husband & I were at the Los Angeles Fisher House Foundation ...They took care of us so good we were there for 6 wks ....but there is no place like home...Thank you Fisher house!

Quentin My favorite fisher house memory is the only one I have. I went to the Wright-Patt house, with 20/800 vision.. Stayed for 9 days and left with 20/25 vision. I really appreciate what you all do for us and our families. May this season bring you many blessings.

Frank  I stayed at the Wright-Patterson AFB Fisher House over Thanksgiving and Christmas, 1997. The base commander invited us to his base-wide Thanksgiving party, giving us tables at the front of the room. Later, the base had a feast for the single Airmen on base and brought all of the leftovers to the Fisher House. I was getting chemo for Testicular Cancer, but I still put on weight over those holidays.

I flew home for Christmas and Julie, then the manager of the house, insisted on giving me a ride to the airport and made me promise that I'd call her when I got back, so she could give me a ride back to the house. She, her staff, and the volunteers, really made an already difficult time, which was worse because of going through it at the holidays, such that it was not only bearable, it was actually fun and brings back more pleasant memories than bad.

I will always love her and the rest of the people who make Fisher House great. They are Santa's elves, no matter what time of year it is.

Kelly  Dec 8th 2011 my husband was severely wounded. While we were at Walter Reed in Bethesda there were so many cheerful faces full of holiday spirit that even in the toughest of times they did their best to help make a very difficult situation just a little bit brighter for the families. We will be forever grateful to the all Fisher Houses we've stayed at along our journey to recovery. Eglin could use a little Christmas cheer now. ; )

Tammy  Our Son was injured in Iraq Dec. 1, 2009 and we stayed at the Fisher House at Ft. Gordon during the holidays and far beyond but during CHRISTmas the house was decorated beautifully and the cookies, pies and cakes were ever present!!!!! They were even prepared with a gift for each of us as our youngest was 15 when his brother was injured!!! We spent every second with our son in the hospital and I (his mother) even slept in the bed next to his but when I went to the Fisher house to take a shower it felt like a little piece of being home. Thanks you for all you do for the families as well as for our soldiers!!!!

Maureen All the Christmas decorations, tree and gifts and treats.. Made me feel like I was at home even though my son was in the hospital after loosing both legs to an IED blast.. Thank you Fisher House.. Especially for the snowball cookies...

Carol  my only memory is when my 18 year old daughter was at the Fisher House in Landstuhl Germany in 2002. She was there because while visiting her husband on deployment is Sicily she went into pre-labor. They flew her to Germany. She was there for +3 months, having to spend Thanksgiving & Christmas away from home & family, but the staff at the hospital & Fisher House welcomed her into their "families". I was able to visit her in early Dec. arriving on the 4th. My grandson, due on the 21st, was waiting for me to get there, he was born on the 5th. I hated leaving them both a few days later, but felt better about it after realizing how much the people there cared for her and my new, and first grandbaby. Thank you all

Michelle  Christmas of 2010 at the Hines fisher house. My dad was in the spinal cord unit and we were at the fisher house. Christmas morning they had gifts for everyone under the tree. Santa also came to hand out gifts to all the kids. A wonderful dinner was prepared for us and my dad was able to come over in his wheelchair to enjoy. The staff at the fisher house made our Christmas special during a very difficult time for our family. Thank you! My kids have wonderful memories of being there. Without the fisher house my mom and family would not have been able to be close to my dad.

Colleen  Thanksgiving at the Fisher House in Fort Hood Nov 2004 when my son was in the hospital on base after being flown from Germany after he was wounded in Iraq!

Samantha I loved how on Christmas 08, the Fisher House in S.A., TX had a motorcycle Santa and elves come up and give the childrens present on bikes. My husband had just come back from overseas and it was a definate welcomed gift for our 8 month old.

Alison My son was hurt Aug 25, 2010 and sent to BAMC, I was able to stay with him during his treatment because of BAMC Fisher House, my favorite memory was being able to make him and his girlfriend (now wife) his first homemade breakfast when he became an outpatient, the beautiful dining room and furniture added to the coziness of feeling like a family again, we were also there to celebrate Mr Fishers 100 th birthday, from watching the bakers from Soldiers Angels create their beautiful cakes to watching all of the hard work all of the cooks preparing the meats in the smokers and the house staff and volunteers doing all that needed to be done, and the actual ceremony, it felt like a blessed holiday to me, and was so thankful to be a part of. Thank you Fisher House! Merry Christmas to you all!
