Following months of fundraising efforts, a check for more than $22,000 was donated Aug. 18 to the Tennessee Fisher House before hundreds of riders who came from across the state for the event.
Among those who participated in the fundraising efforts include the Bumpus Harley Davidson brothers, Gold Star Moms, and The Rolling Thunder Riders of West Tennessee, in addition to others.
"This is an amount which exceeded our expectations" said Scott Bumpus, owner of Bumpus Harley Davidson in Jackson, whose brother, Tom Bumpus, owns the Harley Davidson dealership on Broad Street in Murfreesboro.
Additional donations not finalized for the presentation would make the total more than $25,000, Tom Bumpus said.
"After Dan Whittle and Hooper Penuel planted the seeds through several Fisher House presentations to our local Harley Davidson rider chapter, back in 2011, I was immediately excited and jumped at the idea of helping our veterans," Tom Bumpus said, following the check presentation.
He said the group put their heads together to come up with a way to involve bike riders across the state, local veterans groups, the public and others.
"This was really a no brainer," he said, adding the veterans deserve to be treated with the respect they have earned serving their fellow Americans.
"We at Bumpus Harley Davidson are so proud of our family of friends for helping us with the Fisher House project," Tom Bumpus said.
"This generous donation from the Harley Davidson community added to the more than $2.1 million already in the coffers, which will put us very close to the $2.5 million we are expected to raise," said Andrea Lawrence, president of the Tennessee Fisher House program.
"Our Fisher House committee is very grateful to the Bumpus family for making this happen for our veterans," Lawrence added. "We have a very giving community and state."
"Holidays, birthdays & anniversaries have been celebrated with tears and smiles with people who truly understand what the other person is experiencing."
