Second graders from the University of Chicago Lab Schools delivered 500 books and games they collected for Fisher House.

Beginning March 1, the home will provide free lodging for families of veterans undergoing treatment at the Hines VA hospital since many times military families cannot afford a long hotel stay while a loved one is hospitalized.

"A family's love is good medicine," Betty Stamatis said. "It's a proven fact having family support accelerates the recovery process.

There are 43 Fisher Houses in the US and one in Germany. All of them are gifts from New York real estate mogul Zachary Fisher and his wife.

This one is Illinois' first.

These students learned about Fisher House and spent the last two months soliciting donations by telling the Fisher House story.

"It touches the people who protect our freedoms," Nicole Power said. "They take care of us and protect our country. The children really found meaning in that."
