Looking for additional ways to show your gratitude to the men and women serving our country on Veteran's Day? Donate your unused frequent flier miles to service members through Hero Miles. The program, created through The Fisher House Foundation, reunites injured members of the military with their families.
Through partnerships with major airlines including Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines and US Airways, Fisher House provides free airline tickets to military men and women who are being treated in a military or VA medical center for injuries from Iraq or Afghanistan. Service men and women are able to fly home on approved leave or have their families visit them at the medical center.
So far, Hero Miles has been able to provide more than 18,000 tickets to hospitalized service members and their families, worth nearly $25 million. Learn how to donate your miles and watch the inspiring Hero Miles video.
The Fisher House Foundation also builds houses that assist families whose loved ones are being treated in military hospitals (much like the Ronald McDonald Houses), enabling them to be close by the injured during times of high stress. The houses are temporary residences that have offered more than 120,000 families with lodging, free of charge, since the program's creation in 1990. Volunteer and donate to the Foundation.
