STOUGHTON Ñ More than 400 people will spin their wheels for many good causes during the third annual Gold's Gym Spin-A-Thon on Friday.

Gym owner Thomas Martini said 24 teams representing 15 different charities have volunteered to ride spin exercise bikes 24 hours straight at the Route 138 gym starting at 6 p.m. on Friday.

The challenge began three years ago when several women gym members were diagnosed with breast cancer, Martini said.

To continue the battle against breast cancer, the women decided to hold a spin-a-thon to raise money for the cause. What began as a single-focus challenge developed into volunteers wanting to raise money for many charities.

Some of this year's charities include the U.S. Military Veterans for the Fisher House to help soldiers returning from Iraq, the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer awareness, Dana Farber, the Jimmy Fund, the Stoughton Food Pantry, South Shore Habitat for Humanity and others.

Members from each team will take turns riding 16 spin bicycles for a minimum of one hour. The teams won't stop riding until 6 p.m. Saturday.

The inaugural spin-a-thon raised $33,000, the second challenge garnered $56,000, and this year Martini said, "We are obviously hoping to do better."
