“A Grateful Nation,” tells powerful stories of wounded warriors, fallen heroes
and their loved ones
New York, NY (May 17, 2013) – The service and sacrifice of America’s volunteer military and their families will come to life this Memorial Day weekend in a radio special, produced by Fisher House Foundation, and set to air on more than 105 news/talk radio stations across the country, including stations in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, Detroit, Seattle, San Antonio and more. Check local listings for stations and times at www.fisherhouse.org.
“A Grateful Nation” is a three-hour, spoken-word program honoring those who have fought and died to defend America over the past 12 years, and the loved ones who share their burden. It includes profiles of several wounded warriors who have overcome serious injuries to rebuild their lives, including Army Captain Ivan Castro, the only blind active duty Green Beret; and Brian Castner, a former Air Force Explosive Ordinance Disposal officer who suffered a traumatic brain injury but went on to write an acclaimed memoir, “The Long Walk.”
The program also features conversations with Gold Star spouses and parents, including Mary Byers, President of the American Gold Star Mothers; and Jessica Schwartz of Cheyenne, Wyo., who stayed at the Fisher House for Families of the Fallen at Dover AFB when her husband was killed in Afghanistan.
In addition to honoring such heroes, “A Grateful Nation” also generates awareness and financial support for Fisher House Foundation’s mission of supporting military families in their time of greatest need.
“This program provides an intimate look at the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, in the most personal of ways," said Ken Fisher, Chairman & CEO of Fisher House Foundation. "We are honored by their devotion to country. Supporting them in their time of need is the least we can do, after all they have done for us."
“A Grateful Nation” is hosted by Scott Slade, award-winning host of “Atlanta’s Morning News” on WSB-AM/FM. It was produced by award-winning veteran broadcaster Randall Bloomquist.
“It’s so important that we continue to remember and support our volunteer military and their families,” Slade said. “These folks make incredible sacrifices to protect our freedom and keep us safe. I’m honored to be part of a program like that.”
"You will never find another place on this earth with such warmth, hospitality and compassion. Most of all, you feel special and much loved. I feel as if I am one of the family at Fisher House."
